West is West film review
Born and raised in Pakistan, struggling local businessman Jahangir (George) Khan now lives in Salford, England, along with his British wife, Ella, and young teen son, Sajid, who cannot speak nor understand Punjabi. However, is picked picked on by other full British class-mates, called a 'Paki', and physically abused so much so that he withdraws into himself and acts out through theft and disobedience. Jahangir's rage turns to violence when he is told that Sajid is in police custody for shop-lifting. He decides to take him to Pakistan where he attempts to be re-united with the rest of his estranged family, including his first wife, Basheera, in order to help him experience self realisation.
Upon arrival there, Sajid rebels and refuses to fall in line, while Jahangir sets out trying to find a wife for his half-son, Maneer. He finds many difficulties in this, due to his past actions of an irresponsible husband and father, giving the influence that his son is capable of doing the same to their daughters. However, out of self pride, he convinces himself it is purely because of his son. This creates family tension, and “George”, in a desperate attempt to fix his past actions, withdrawals all of his and his partners money to build a new house in Pakistan. This forces his British wife to travel to Pakistan and sort this all out. Whilst there, she gets to see the face of the women, whos marriage she stole. However, in the part of the movie where Sajid has a turning point in his attitude towards work and his family, the two wives settle their differences by showing their concerns for each others well being. In the end, Sajid resolves the last of his familys issues, by finding his brother a willing wife.
